An absolute must - upload a photo! There is nothing more important for a dating profile than a photo. Although it should be the best one you have, if the only one around at the time of creating your profile is a blurry photo of you standing a mile away from the camera - it is better than nothing. Profiles without photos receive at least 10% less responses as those that do have them. You can always update your photo at any time.

  • Make it a good one, get someone else to take it. If you take a good selection with a digital camera and at different angles, with different backgrounds and maybe even have a set of outfits to change into, you will have a choice from which to pick the best two or three. Concentrate on your best features, although of course if this is your feet you are unlikely to get a lot of response from a photo of them. Perhaps you could get your hair done or dress as if you’re going out on a date – this will help to set the mood. Guys, this applies to you too - it's pretty obvious from a lot of profiles that men tend to take less care when choosing a photo. Women will not be attracted to a photo of you slouching over the playstation with a can of beer in your hand!
  • Browse the site and have a look at other profiles, choose a couple you like and decide why you like the look of them. Make a note of their plus points or their catchy titles and try to avoid things you feel they have done badly.
  • Turn off your computer, grab a notepad and start writing. People often find it easier to write than type and its certainly easier on the eyes, so why not write your answers out and type them up later? You will find you write a better description if you take the time to think about it carefully rather than diving right in.
  • Be honest! This is very important – you will only attract the people you truly want to be attractive to if you are honest with them and yourself. If your profile describes somebody you are not, your prospective dates will be interested in that person, not you. Describing yourself as a stud muffin with a 6 pack and then turning up for a first date looking like a reject from the 70's with a sparrow chest will just waste both your time and your dates. Similarly - ladies, if you are not a Marylin Monroe type sex symbol, don't pretend you are. (if you wear a blonde wig for your profile photo, you will have to continue wearing it through many uncomfortable dates - just not worth it).
  • Ask your friends to describe you in three words. Think about your best qualities and sell them in your dating profile.
  • Don’t just tell people about your qualities, show them. Don’t just say “I love music” – describe what kind of music you like. Write something like “I love 50's Rock 'n' Roll & Rockabilly – I was at a Carl Perkins gig last week”, or “I love nothing better than to relax whilst listening to Beethovens Fifth”.
  • One of the biggest turn-offs to many users is bad grammar and spelling. This will give the impression you have just 'slung' a profile together and therefore not too bothered about making a success of your online dating experience. Double check what you write, or the next person reading it will be a single person who liked the look of you.

So to write a good dating profile, get out your notepad, be honest and be positive. Be specific about the things you like. But most of all – upload a picture!
