Overseas Dating for Expats - Turkey
:
Dating in Turkey. Expats Dating in Turkey
You do have to keep an open mind when dating in Turkey. Foreigners are perceived to be well off, and therefore western women are often prime targets to be wined and dined by young Turkish men with a view to securing the right to a foreign passport.
This is understandable when the average wage is around 1,000 YTL a month. Many Turks work exceptionally hard for this, and I guess you can’t blame them for trying! However, it is well known in the western world that women become fair game for those looking for a marriage of convenience so should be very careful about whom they date. It is not just those gullible young girls who fall in love with a smile and some friendly chat whilst on holiday, it actually happened to a 42 year old friend of mine, a solicitor by occupation
and certainly nobody’s fool.

If you ladies bear the warnings in mind, dating in Turkey can be great fun, especially for expats who tend to be quite secure financially. There is so much to do and see and the climate is fantastic for 8 months of
the year, great for dining out or evening drinks on one of the many promenades
or marinas.
Due to their religion and culture, Turkish girls have been bought up very different to westerners. They don’t tend to go out to bars and clubs, get drunk and get laid like many of today’s western teenagers. Many still feel that
it is inappropriate to have sex outside of marriage and men tend to live with
their parents much longer as the family values in Turkey are very high.
Finding Love Online
Turkey is primarily a Muslim country but is becoming very modern and westernised
in many ways, especially in cities such as Istanbul. In stark contrast, there
are Turkish women wearing their head gear, while kissing their other halves
in public, and Istanbul has a huge population of transvestites.
There are a lot of misconceptions about Turkey as a country, for instance I
read recently that you can’t find tampons in Turkey because people believe
they destroy a girl's virginity. That is complete rubbish. Although I’ve
never seen them advertised on Turkish TV, you can buy them in any supermarket.
I’ve also heard that newlyweds have been known to get divorced if women
are found not to be virgins. I doubt this very much as I know of few casual
sex encounters between Turkish teenagers.
A warning for men looking at dating in Turkey – I read this on a forum:
“While in Istanbul you should beware of a common scam (which is described
in the Lonely Planet book) targeted at Western men. You may be seated alone
in bar and approached by a friendly young man who invites you over to a table
where two pretty girls are seated. A round of drinks arrives and you chat for
a while with the girls, then they get up to go to the ladies' room and disappear.
Your new "friend" meanwhile leaves the bar to go outside and talk
on his cell phone; then, he too, disappears. The waiter brings you the bill
and says all drinks are on your tab. What's worse, they've charged you $50 per
drink. If you try to resist, you're escorted to the back office and threatened
to cough it up.”

Whilst dating in Turkey, you will have to contend with cultural differences unless you are dating expats in Turkey who come from similar backgrounds to yourself.
Turkish men tend to think like many of the older generation around Europe –
a woman’s place is in the home, cooking, cleaning and tending to his needs.
If you are not this type of girl, better start educating your new boyfriend
in the early days of the relationship. His mother is likely to think you are
the girlfriend from hell as they would always prefer their sons to date girls
from their own culture. Learning Turkish would be very helpful in this respect
– at least when she is complaining about your household skills, you will
be able to understand and answer her, you may get some respect for this at least.
A Turkish man has great respect for his mother, so it would be wise not to get
in a slanging match, or bitch about her - he is likely to take her side. For
men dating a Turkish girl, my advice would be to take things slowly. They are
unlikely to be used to their bones being jumped early on in the relationship.
For foreigners living in Turkey who are looking to date other expats, there
are plenty of opportunities to meet people of your own nationality if you are
living in an expat area. Many of these areas have local newspapers with a social
events section for meeting other likeminded people, or alternatively you can
register on this site and indulge in a bit of online dating!
Taking it one step further, getting married in Turkey is relatively simple
whether marrying a Turkish national, any foreigner, or in the case
of both parties being of different nationalities. Turkey provides
some stunning venue as well as being cost effective, or you may
wish to consider the Turkish Repulic of North
Cyprus, is now emerging as one of the best places in the Med
for weddings abroad, with stunning beaches 5 star hotels, superb
restaurants, all mixed with the natural beauty and historical architecture.
